Problems Related to JSE Sector Reorganisation

This information applies to ShareFinder users who subscribe to the InvestorData download service. If you are a Sharenet subscriber, see here instead.

JSE Sectors rearranged

A new sector structure was introduced by the JSE Stock Exchange. On Monday, 24 June 2002 this caused a problem for ShareFinder users because certain of the old JSE sector indices were not updated in the nightly download.

Share data for 24/06/2002 is missing

ShareFinder erroneously warned that the download of June 24 was missing, and did not allow any further updates beyond that date. The reason was that the JSE indices, which ShareFinder uses to confirm that the database has been updated, were themselves not being updated by the JSE.

This problem has been resolved. InvestorData sent a special download file, 20020624.zip dated June 24, the following day on June 25, which corrected the problem. If you are still experiencing this problem, please save the special download file from the above link into your C:\ID folder and allow ShareFinder to process it.

"Your database has not been updated for a few days..."

ShareFinder erroneously gave this warning when calculating long or short term share recommendations. If you use ShareFinder's Portfolio Controller facility, this message might have appeared several times in quick succession when opening the Alert window. The reason for the warning is similar to the above.

This problem has been resolved. The warning should no longer appear unless you do in fact miss a few days' downloads.

Warning message appears repeatedly

A bug in the Portfolio Controller Alert window causes the warning, "Your database has not been updated for a few days..." to appear repeatedly, each time waiting for you to click OK. Eventually the warning will stop appearing. A future program update will correct this behaviour. You can prevent the Alert window from opening automatically by following these steps:

  1. Click the "Analyse" menu
  2. Click "Portfolio Controller Process"
  3. Click "Startup Alerts" so that it changes to "OFF".

This problem has been resolved. Upgrade package 0704 corrected this and other bugs, as well as introducing new enhancements to ShareFinder. Versions of ShareFinder dated 4/07/2002 and later include the upgrade.

What happened to all the old JSE sector indices?

The old JSE sector indices, previously named JSE-xxxx, have been renamed to OJSExxxx. For example the Financial index was JSE-FIN and is now OJSEFIN. These files contain all the history up to 21/06/2002, but are not being maintained after that date.

New JSE sector indices

Indices for the new JSE sectors will be named JSE-xxxx and will be loaded initially with six months of history as calculated and provided by the JSE Stock Exchange. This will be done automatically as part of the daily maintenance.

What happened to JSE-OVER and JSE-IND?

These are two of the old JSE sectors which have special significance to ShareFinder's internal processes. For this reason InvestorData is continuing to maintain history and data. In a future program upgrade ShareFinder will be modified to use the new sector indices that replaced these, which will then fall away.

Still having trouble?

By now the problems associated with the JSE sector changeover earlier this week should all have been resolved. If you are still experiencing difficulties, please contact support@rcis.co.za.

We wish to apologise to all ShareFinder users for the inconvenience caused during the disruption and thank you for your patience while we worked to resolve it.
